Today is Safer Internet Day, a global initiative that encourages everyone to think more carefully about how we use technology and the internet. This year’s theme, ‘safe and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)’  feels particularly relevant as AI becomes an increasingly visible part of everyday life, education, and the workplace.

At Autism Unlimited, we recognise the powerful role technology can play in supporting learning, communication, and independence. At the same time, we know that new technologies bring new challenges. Safer Internet Day gives us a valuable opportunity to reflect on how we support our students, the people we support, and our colleagues to navigate the digital world safely, confidently, and responsibly.

Why Safer Internet Day matters to our community

For many autistic individuals, technology can be a vital tool, opening up new ways to learn, express ideas, and connect with others. AI-powered tools can offer real benefits, from supporting communication and organisation to encouraging creativity and problem-solving.

However, AI can also be complex and sometimes misleading if people don’t understand how it works, what information it uses, or when it may not be appropriate to rely on it. This is why digital safety, critical thinking, and clear guidance are so important, particularly for those who may be more vulnerable online.

Supporting safe and responsible use of AI

As part of our commitment to safe digital practice, we have recently developed an AI usage policy, alongside clear communications to support colleagues in using AI safely and responsibly at work. This guidance helps ensure that AI tools are used ethically, securely, and in line with our values, protecting privacy, maintaining professional standards, and safeguarding the people we support.

By equipping colleagues with the knowledge and confidence to use AI appropriately, we create a safer digital environment for everyone. Responsible use of technology starts with informed professionals who can model good practice and have open, supportive conversations about online safety.

Alongside this work, we continue to build digital awareness with our students, supporting them to:

  • Understand where AI appears in everyday technology
  • Recognise when online information may not be accurate or appropriate
  • Build confidence in asking questions and seeking help
  • Use technology in ways that are safe, positive, and empowering

A Message from Shaun Houghton, Director of Tech and Innovation

“AI is becoming part of everyday life for all of us, and with that comes both opportunity and responsibility. At Autism Unlimited, our focus is on using technology in ways that are safe, ethical, and supportive. By putting clear guidance in place for colleagues and building digital awareness with our students, we’re helping everyone feel more confident, informed, and protected in an increasingly digital world.”

Looking Ahead

Safer Internet Day reminds us that online safety isn’t just a one-day conversation, it’s an ongoing commitment. Through education, clear policies, and open discussion, we’re proud to be taking steps to ensure that AI and digital tools are used in ways that are inclusive, responsible, and beneficial for everyone in the Autism Unlimited community.

Together, we can help ensure technology remains a positive force supporting learning, independence, and opportunity, while keeping people safe online.
