We are delighted to share that Carla Hurst, Locality Manager within our Adult Services, was shortlisted down to the final two for the Outstanding Leadership in Care award at the Dorset Care Awards 2026, an exceptional achievement that reflects her dedication, expertise, and impact across our services.

The awards ceremony took place on 8th May 2026 at the George Albert Hotel in Dorchester. Having been nominated and then selected as a finalist from a highly competitive field, Carla attended the event with a colleague to celebrate this well‑deserved recognition.

Although she did not take home the overall award, reaching the final two is an extraordinary accomplishment, and we could not be prouder. This recognition highlights the outstanding leadership Carla brings to Autism Unlimited every day.

Carla is an exceptional and dedicated leader who plays a central role in overseeing service delivery, team development, and the quality of support provided to the people we work alongside. Her responsibilities extend far beyond operational management; she is deeply committed to ensuring that every individual receives meaningful, person‑centred support that enables them to live fulfilling and independent lives.

This commitment is reflected in the positive feedback shared by autistic people she supports:

You can hear when Carla is in the building, her voice is not that quiet. When I say this to her, it makes her laugh. I get on well with Carla and she has been there for me which means a lot.

I miss seeing Carla, she used to make me smile and laugh. If I needed something, Carla would always get me answers

Carla’s impact extends to her team as well. She leads by example, immersing herself in the day‑to‑day realities of the service and never asking her team to do anything she wouldn’t do herself. Through regular supervision, coaching, and creative development opportunities, she empowers staff to build their skills and progress confidently into independent management roles.

Carla leads with authenticity, compassion, and integrity, consistently placing the people we support at the heart of every decision. Her person‑centred approach is not just a guiding principle, it is something she brings to life through her actions, ensuring inclusion, dignity, and meaningful experiences for everyone.

Dela Begum, Head of Adult Services and Carla’s line manager, said:

I am delighted with Carla being shortlisted for this nomination. It is a testament to her leadership and a reflection of the positive difference she makes to her team, families and the people she supports. Congratulations on a well‑deserved achievement.
