Our brand-new supported living home in Christchurch has just opened its doors and welcomed the first two tenants.

Tony and Nicola* moved from one of our residential homes into Aspire last week as a major step in their life plan - they wanted the freedom to live more independently and we are thrilled to have been able to make those steps a reality. Now, they will be able to enjoy the perfect balance of privacy, freedom, social interaction and care as well as benefit from security of tenure. This is one of the projects that will facilitate the transition from a residential to supported living model in Autism Unlimited. Our approach is to work in partnership with our residents to support and empower them to lead more independent lives without sacrificing the level of support they receive.

What is Aspire? Aspire is a recently refurbished seven-unit property comprising three self-contained studio apartments and four en-suite bedrooms specifically for adults living with autism. Complete with sleep-in facilities for the support team, the stunning house provides a safe and secure environment whilst allowing for round-the-clock support where needed. Featuring a light and airy communal dining room, kitchen and conservatory as well as an immaculate garden, tenants have their own dedicated private living quarters as well as shared spaces they can use at their leisure. Depending on individual needs, care will be available 24/7 which will support tenants with tasks such as cooking, cleaning, housework, personal care, shopping and community activities. While Autism Unlimited has been commissioned to provide the care to the adults living at Aspire, the property is owned and managed by Inclusion Housing, giving tenants security of tenure and the freedom to manage their own provisions.

Siún Cranny, CEO of Autism Unlimited, said: “I’m delighted to be welcoming our first tenants to Aspire. Not only will this enable them to lead more independent lives, it will also provide them with their own space for those times when they want to be alone or enjoy some peace and quiet. It is a perfect mix of security and choice with their own tenancy agreement and the knowledge that our support team are on hand when they need them.”

A full house Committed to providing support to autistic individuals at every stage of life, Autism Unlimited plans to welcome two more new tenants in the coming weeks, as they prepare for the next steps in their journey as young adults. There is huge interest in this type of provision and we hope to develop more opportunities like Aspire in the future. *Names changed to protect identity of vulnerable adults.
